Old Torrance Olmsted District (Images of America: California) (Images of America (Arcadia Publishing))

The City of Torrance anchors Los Angeles County's South Bay area and is known widely as a headquarters city for corporate giants Exxon Mobil, Nissan, Honda, and others. Yet the city's unique history often gets glossed over. Downtown Torrance, also known as Old Torrance and the Olmsted Districts, was laid out in 1912 by Frederick Law Olmsted Jr., the influential urban-designer son of the Father of Landscape Architecture, F. L. Olmsted Sr. The town founder and patriarch, Jared Sidney Torrance, gave Olmsted Jr. the imperative to create a unique industrial city. The results are in the streets, buildings, and parks between Western Avenue and Crenshaw Boulevard, north of today's Plaza Del Amo and south of Dominguez Way. Some structures in this district were designed by renowned architect Irving Gill, including the Southern Pacific Railroad Bridge and the Pacific Electric Railway depot.

The 2011 Import and Export Market for Tufted Carpets and Other Textile Floor Coverings in South Africa

The 2011 Import and Export Market for Tufted Carpets and Other Textile Floor Coverings in South Africa

On the demand side, exporters and strategic planners focusing on tufted carpets and other textile floor coverings in South Africa face a number of questions. Which countries are supplying tufted carpets and other textile floor coverings to South Africa? How important is South Africa compared to others in terms of the entire global and regional market? How much do the imports of tufted carpets and other textile floor coverings vary from one country of origin to another in South Africa? On the supply side, South Africa also exports tufted carpets and other textile floor coverings. Which countries receive the most exports from South Africa? How are these exports concentrated across buyers? What is the value of these exports and which countries are the largest buyers?

This report was created for strategic planners, international marketing executives and import/export managers who are concerned with the market for tufted carpets and other textile floor coverings in South Africa. With the globalization of this market, managers can no longer be contented with a local view. Nor can managers be contented with out-of-date statistics which appear several years after the fact. I have developed a methodology, based on macroeconomic and trade models, to estimate the market for tufted carpets and other textile floor coverings for those countries serving South Africa via exports, or supplying from South Africa via imports. It does so for the current year based on a variety of key historical indicators and econometric models.

In what follows, Chapter 2 begins by summarizing where South Africa fits into the world market for imported and exported tufted carpets and other textile floor coverings. The total level of imports and exports on a worldwide basis, and those for South Africa in particular, is estimated using a model which aggregates across over 150 key country markets and projects these to the current year. From there, each country

The 2011 Import and Export Market for Tufted Textile Floor Coverings of Wool or Fine Animal Hair in South Africa

On the demand side, exporters and strategic planners focusing on tufted textile floor coverings of wool or fine animal hair in South Africa face a number of questions. In what follows, Chapter 2 begins by summarizing where South Africa fits into the world market for imported and exported tufted textile floor coverings of wool or fine animal hair. The total level of imports and exports on a worldwide basis, and those for South Africa in particular, is estimated using a model which aggregates across over 150 key country markets and projects these to the current year. From there, each country represents a percent of the world market. This market is served from a number of competitive countries of origin. Based on both demand- and supply-side dynamics, market shares by country of origin are then calculated across each country market destination. These shares lead to a volume of import and export values for each country and are aggregated to regional and world totals. In doing so, we are able to obtain maximum likelihood estimates of both the value of each market and the share that South Africa is likely to receive this year. From these figures, rankings are calculated to allow managers to prioritize South Africa compared to other major country markets. In this way, all the figures provided in this report are forecasts that can be combined with internal information sources for strategic planning purposes.

photography tip 04: Sharpness

When it comes to publishing photos for the web, i always have a sharpen pass done for each one i upload, as well as reducing the image size of course. my process for this is simple. first of all i avoid over sharpening: it tends to transform the image in a pile of unnecessary visual noise. easy to spot when it's the case. it needs to remain subtle. Secondly, my initial process is to create a duplicate layer and paste the photo on it. then apply a sharpen pass (most of the time i use "smart sharpen"). and finally erase the effect on that second layer in areas where the sharpen isn't needed. especially on blurry areas. sharpening Out of focus areas of a photo is never needed.

Rock Pile

Rock Pile

IMG_3764

I recently made a hike through Rock Pile Mountain Wilderness Area. This circle of piled rock was made in pre-Columbus times but nobody knows who or when. At the backside of this 12-mile loop-trail is Cave Branch Hollow, containing some of the prettiest shut-ins I've visited. Unfortunately on this occasion they were virtually dry.

This is quite a difficult hike. It is also the most hard to follow trails I've been on in Missouri. Do not attempt this one without GPS and/or map and compass.

Fast Buck Freddie's Department Store on Duval St. in Key West, Florida

So where did the name 'Fast Buck Freddie's' come from? Well, it was a popular cut from the first gold record of the group Jefferson Starship, Red Octopus. Desperate to find an interesting name, Bill & Tony were flipping through record albums for inspiration--and Fast Buck Freddie's, a most unlikely name for a retail store, seemed perfect for South Florida: home of pirates, con artists, real estate sharks, and drug runners. With Key West's salty history, we would be the new pirates in town. We vowed to always contradict our name with the appearance of the store and the merchandise. And the name has been a great success--not only with customers who promote us--but with the media who has lavished attention on us. We enjoy a national and international reputation

During our second year, the old S. H. Kress Dime store closed; and the 15,000 sq. foot building was quickly snapped up by a local entrepreneur. Fast Bucks, expanded to its max, in the small conch house went to the Kress building's new owner to inquire on space. He admired Fast Buck Freddie's and wanted to give us an opportunity. In November of 1978 we opened a further expanded Fast Buck Freddie's in our current location. Although the store was much smaller than it is today; we added cards, stationary, candles, and men's and women's sportswear to increase our repeat local traffic. John Muhly, our General Manager for the past 29 years, joined us at this time, coming to us as a men's sportswear buyer of a fine Florida specialty store.
Suddenly, in the early 1980's others began to discover our island and with the influx of the tourist, Key West and Fast Buck Freddie's prospered. Year by year we knocked out a rear wall here and there and expanded the store to its present size.

1939-Jefferson High School

1939-Jefferson High School

1319 East 41st Street,
Los Angeles, California

In 1915, the citizen of Los Angeles voted to sell bonds to raise 4,600,000 dollars to build schools in the Los Angeles area. Approximately $500,000 was appropriated to build Jefferson High School[2] on the "Stadium East Grounds" (The Old Coliseum)[A] which held approximately 25,000 people in a circled amphitheater configuration. The "Stadium" as it was known was the site for hosting and entertaining travelers on the way to both the San Diego and San Francisco world expo in 1915. Numerous Rodeos and bicycle races were held at the location.[3]

Architect Norman F Marsh was hired to design the new Jefferson High School complex, the property front 1235 feet on Hooper Avenue, 1149 feet on Compton Avenue, and 952 feet on thirty Fourth Street and 392 feet on thirty eight streets. The buildings of the group will be of brick and concrete construction, being faced with rug tapestry brick and trimmed with artificial stoned. All corridors and stairways will be made absolutely fire proof. The classic style will be followed, each of the main structures having a dignified entrance portico with stone pediment and columns.[2]

Jefferson opened its doors on September 11, 1916, with 24 faculty members and two buildings completed. Theodore Fulton was installed as the School first Principal.

On March 10, 1933 in the city of Long Beach, an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.4 which totally destroyed the infrastructure of the six buildings which composed the Jefferson High School Campus. The campus was closed from March 10 until April 6 while the school boards access the situation. On April 6, tent bungalows provided by the school board was erected on the football fields. Classes were shortened to half day sessions in order to serve the entire student population.[5]
[edit] The New Beginning

In 1933, Architect Stiles O Clement was hired to build a 45 unit campus with a budget of $353,000.[6] The "Streamline Moderne" building structures were completed in 1935. Ross Dickinson was selected and funded by Federal Art Project to Paint four 11 feet by 5.5 foot murals with the theme “The History of Recorded Word”. The murals were completed in 1937.
